The EPA has finally set enforceable limits on PFAS chemicals in public drinking water. After decades of these forever chemicals flowing freely through municipal water systems, the government is now requiring water utilities to test for and reduce PFAS contamination to near zero levels.
This is a massive step forward for public health. But if you think this means your tap water is suddenly safe, you need to understand what these regulations actually mean in practice and why your family may still be at risk.
What the New Rules Require
The EPA has established maximum contaminant levels for six specific PFAS compounds, including PFOA and PFOS, two of the most common and most studied forever chemicals. The new limits are set at 4 parts per trillion for each of these compounds individually.
To put that in perspective, 4 parts per trillion is an incredibly small amount. It is the equivalent of about four drops of water in an Olympic sized swimming pool. The fact that the EPA set the bar this low tells you how dangerous these chemicals are, even at trace levels.
Water utilities across the country now have until 2029 to comply with these new standards. That means they need to install advanced treatment technology, conduct regular testing, and report their results to the public.
Why 2029 Is a Long Time to Wait
Here is the problem. Your family is drinking water today. The regulations give utilities up to three years to even begin monitoring and five years to fully comply. During that entire transition period, PFAS may still be flowing through your pipes at levels that exceed the new safety limits.
And even after utilities achieve compliance, the regulations only cover six specific PFAS compounds. There are over 12,000 different PFAS chemicals in existence. Many of them have never been studied, and they are not covered by the new rules. Your water could meet every federal standard and still contain forever chemicals that no one is testing for.

A system that works perfectly in the lab does not always perform the same way when processing millions of gallons per day with varying source water quality.
