Florida is known for its beaches, its weather, and its lifestyle. What it should also be known for is its water quality challenges. If you live in Florida and you are drinking unfiltered tap water, there are some things you need to understand about what is coming through your pipes.

Where Florida’s Water Comes From

Most of Florida’s drinking water comes from underground aquifers, primarily the Floridan Aquifer and the Biscayne Aquifer. These are massive underground limestone formations that store water. The problem is that limestone is porous and permeable, which means surface contaminants can seep down into the water supply relatively easily compared to other geological formations.

Agricultural runoff, septic system leachate, industrial discharge, and stormwater all find their way into Florida’s groundwater over time. The state’s flat terrain and high water table make this worse because there is less natural filtration happening between the surface and the aquifer.

Common Contaminants in Florida Water

Florida water has its own unique set of challenges that differ from other parts of the country.

Chlorine and chloramines are added by every municipal water system in the state to kill bacteria. While necessary for safety during transport through aging pipes, these chemicals create taste and odor issues and can form disinfection byproducts that are potentially harmful with long term exposure.

Hard water minerals are extremely common throughout Florida. Calcium and magnesium concentrations are high because the water passes through limestone before reaching the aquifer. Pipes that were installed decades ago are deteriorating, and as they break down, they can leach lead, copper, and other metals into the water supply. Even if the water leaving the treatment plant meets all standards, it can pick up contaminants on the way to your faucet.

Boil water notices happen regularly in Florida communities after storms, pipe breaks, and pressure drops. These events remind us that the system between the treatment plant and your tap is not always reliable.

What This Means for Your Family

If you have children, the stakes are higher. Children drink more water relative to their body weight than adults. Their developing bodies are more susceptible to the effects of contaminants like lead, PFAS, and nitrates. What might be a minor exposure for an adult can have lasting developmental effects on a child.

If you have aging parents or family members with compromised immune systems, waterborne pathogens that survive chlorine treatment can cause serious illness. Cryptosporidium and Giardia are resistant to chlorine and require physical filtration to remove.

If anyone in your household has skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis, the chlorine in unfiltered water can trigger flare-ups every time they shower or bathe.
