You have probably seen the headlines. Microplastics are showing up everywhere. In the ocean, in our food, in the air we breathe. But the one that should concern you most is the microplastics in your drinking water.

Recent studies have found that the average person ingests about a credit card’s worth of plastic every single week. A significant portion of that exposure comes directly from the water we drink. Whether you are on city water or well water, these tiny plastic particles are making their way into your glass.

Where Do They Come From?

Microplastics are fragments smaller than 5 millimeters that break off from larger plastic items as they degrade. They come from plastic bottles, synthetic clothing fibers released during laundry, tire dust that washes off roads, and the breakdown of countless plastic products in landfills and waterways.

Once these particles enter the water supply, they are incredibly difficult to remove at the municipal level. Water treatment plants were designed decades ago to handle biological contamination and basic chemical treatment. They were never built to filter out microscopic plastic particles that are measured in microns.

Even bottled water is not safe. Studies have shown that bottled water contains significantly more microplastics than tap water, likely from the plastic bottle itself leaching particles into the liquid over time. So switching to bottled water actually makes the problem worse, not better.

The Health Concerns

Scientists are still studying the full impact of microplastic ingestion on human health, but what we know so far is concerning. These particles can carry toxic chemicals on their surface, including heavy metals and endocrine disrupting compounds. When you ingest them, those chemicals can be released inside your body.

Research has linked microplastic exposure to inflammation in the gut, disruption of hormone function, and potential impacts on reproductive health. For children and pregnant women, the risks are amplified because developing bodies are more vulnerable to chemical exposure.

The particles are so small that some can even pass through the intestinal wall and enter the bloodstream. Once in the blood, they have been found in lung tissue, liver tissue, and even placental tissue. This is not a future problem. It is happening right now inside your body.

Why Most Filters Miss Them

Standard carbon filters and basic pitcher filters are designed to improve taste by removing chlorine. Their pore size is far too large to catch microplastic particles. The water flows through, the chlorine gets absorbed, but the plastic fragments pass right through the filter media untouched.

Even many whole house systems on the market use filter cartridges with pore ratings of 20 or 50 microns. That is fine for catching sand and rust, but microplastics can be as small as 1 micron. If your filter cannot catch particles at that scale, it is not protecting you from plastic contamination.

The Multi-Stage Solution

Effective microplastic removal requires a system with multiple filtration stages that progressively reduce particle size. A good sediment pre-filter catches the larger debris. Then a tighter secondary filter with a 5 micron or smaller rating captures the fine particles that slip through the first stage.
