Most people have heard of chlorine, but chloramine is a different chemical altogether, and it presents a unique challenge when it comes to home water filtration.

What Chloramine Actually Is
Chloramine is created by combining chlorine with ammonia. The resulting compound is more stable than chlorine alone, which is exactly why water utilities love it. It does not break down as quickly, so it keeps killing bacteria throughout the entire distribution system.

Contact time is also critical. The water needs to spend enough time in contact with the catalytic carbon for the reaction to fully complete. Systems that push water through too quickly will only partially reduce chloramine levels, leaving you with a false sense of security.
