If you have ever had your home water tested, you probably heard the term TDS. It stands for Total Dissolved Solids. A lot of water filter companies use TDS meters as a scare tactic to sell their products. They dip a meter into your tap water, show you a high number, and tell you your water is dangerously dirty.

What Makes Up Total Dissolved Solids?

When TDS Becomes a Health Concern
While minerals are harmless, high TDS can also indicate the presence of toxic elements. If your water source is near agricultural areas, a high reading might mean elevated nitrates or pesticide runoff. If you live in an older home, it could indicate lead or copper leaching from your pipes.
The EPA recommends that drinking water have a TDS level below 500 parts per million. When water exceeds that level, it often tastes bitter or salty and can leave spots on your dishes and fixtures.
